After the Storm: What Perth Pool Owners Should Check Before Swimming Again
Perth gets its share of serious storms, and pools cop a lot of what comes down — leaves, branches, dirt, and sometimes damage you can't see at a glance. Before anyone jumps back in, run through this.
1. Clear the debris first
Skim out leaves and branches, empty the baskets (they fill fast after a storm), and get the big stuff out before it sinks and rots. The longer organic matter sits, the harder the recovery.
2. Check the equipment
- Did the power cut out? A pump that stopped for an extended period means still water — check it's running again.
- Any visible damage? Look over the pump, filter, and any exposed equipment for storm or debris damage.
- Strange noises after restart? Debris through the system can cause problems — if it sounds off, don't keep running it.
3. Don't trust the water yet
Storm water dilutes your chemistry and washes contaminants in. Even if it looks okay, test before swimming — pH and sanitiser are usually thrown out, and clear-looking water can still be unbalanced.
4. Watch for the delayed green
A storm sets up the perfect conditions for an algae bloom a few days later: debris, knocked-out chemistry, and maybe a pump that was off for a while. Getting on top of it early is far easier than recovering a green pool the following weekend.
