Green Pool Recovery in Perth: How to Get Your Pool Swimmable Again

A green pool is one of the most common calls we get, especially after a hot spell or a week or two away. The good news: most green pools are recoverable. The question is whether it's a quick chemical fix or a sign something mechanical has failed.

Why pools turn green in Perth

Algae blooms when three things line up: warm water, sunlight, and a drop in sanitiser. Perth summers deliver the first two for free. The sanitiser drop is usually the trigger — a chlorinator that's stopped dosing, a pump that's not circulating, or simply a fortnight of no top-ups while you were away.

Can you fix a green pool yourself?

For a light green tinge with the water still clear-ish, many owners can recover it:

  1. Check the basics first — is the pump running and actually moving water? Is the filter pressure normal? No circulation, no recovery.
  2. Balance and shock — test the water, correct pH, then shock-dose chlorine. (Dosing depends on your pool volume and current readings — get it tested rather than guessing.)
  3. Run the filter hard — extended run times while it clears, backwashing or cleaning the filter as it loads up with dead algae.
  4. Brush and vacuum — algae clings to walls and floor; brushing exposes it to sanitiser.

When to call a pro

If the water is opaque green (you can't see the bottom), or it's gone green again shortly after you cleared it, the problem usually isn't the chemistry — it's the equipment or the filter. A repeat bloom points to a failing chlorinator cell, a worn pump, or a filter that can no longer hold the load.

That's where it pays to have someone look at the whole system rather than throwing chemicals at it. We service pools right across Perth's northern suburbs, with no call-out fee and a 12-month workmanship warranty on repairs.
